Picking the safest car for your teen…

Knowing your child is going to be climbing behind the wheel of a car can be nerve wracking. Concerns start to flood in about their driving abilities, the abilities of those around them and if they can make quick decisions. As a parent, it is natural to want to protect your child and to worry every time they get behind the wheel.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Insurance Information Institute (III) say there’s something worried parents can do to protect their teens – choose a safe vehicle.

              - Avoid older vehicles. Each year, car manufacturers develop new and improve on older safety equipment. New cars have under gone more stringent crash tests and benefit from stronger safety cages and constantly improving knowledge about “Crumple Zones” As a result a newer mid-size car with airbags would be a safer choice than an older, larger car without airbags.

- Don’t let your teen drive an unstable vehicle. When a young driver gets behind the wheel of a suv they tend to over-correct their steering, causing a higher rate of rollovers in these less stable vehicles.

- Fast cars cause accidents, faster. The faster a car goes, the faster a young driver can find themselves in trouble. Choosing a vehicle with a less “cool” image can decrease the rate that your teen will be in an accident. Car insurance is higher for a teen driver and tickets and accidents will certainly push the rates higher.
